‘Rural India spends only one third of the money needed for the right diet’

Ahmedabad: Covid’s pandemic brings our diet into a sharp focus because of his close relationship with immunity.
But is our regular ‘Staple’ diet providing adequate nutrition? How much does it cost when one of every three people suffer from a malnutrition related to a diet? Study recently published ‘truthing costs to achieve food recommended eat lancet: Evidence from Rural India’ in Elsevier Journal global food security argues that expenses for the diet are far less ($ 0.62-1 or Rs 45 to 73 ) per person per person per person per person.
Day rather than Recommended EAT Lancet of $ 3.3 (RS 241) to get 2,500 kcal per day.
This study was conducted by Soumya Gupta and Prabhu Pingali from the Agricultural Institute and Nutrition of Tata Cornell at Cornell University, Vidya Vemireddy from IIM Ahmedabad, and Dhiraj Singh from the Institute of Research and Growth.
The researchers argue that the rural market must be tracked to provide an affordable and nutritious diet to the economically weaker part.
They also highlight the need for plant diversification and increased awareness.
The researchers referred to the gap between needs and intake, especially for fruits and vegetables, seafood and poultry, red meat and processed food.
The gap is more than $ 1 for each person per day because the current expenditure is about one third of the required amount.
Data collection for this paper was conducted in 2018-19 in the weekly village market in Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
Information about diversity and the price of almost 250 items was collected for 12 months.
Data compared to EAT Lancet recommendations.
Previous data from the Indian Economic Monitoring Center (CMIE) also referred to a diet fee at a price of around $ 1.7 (around Rs 127).
