Sahar Cops Nab Customs Officer for Gold Theft

Mumbai: A customs inspector at the airport was arrested last week because stealing 995gms from Gold Coins worth RS 34 Lakh from the customs warehouse before being transferred to another place in April.
He has been ordered under the IPC for criminal violations of trust by public servants.
Gold coins were taken to India by National US Jeffrey Holmes Harrissin during his visit on January 13, 2020.
However, he was not allowed to take him together because he had not paid customs.
Coins are stored in the detention room because there are provisions where leaflets can continue to hold articles in the warehouse and collect while flying back to their own country.
Accused of Uday Singh Gurjar, posted at Mumbai Airport, allegedly planned to steal gold after he noticed that the US national did not return for more than a year to collect valuables stored in the customs warehouse safe.
The department’s request has begun against Gurjar and he has been suspended from work.
There were two other US citizens who came to Mumbai along with Harrissin and they also left their gold coins in the customs warehouse.
The three are given a receipt of detention that must be produced before customs officials to collect goods before leaving the country.
“While two other US citizens collected their gold from the warehouse after returning a receipt, Gurjar had marked the arrow in the register to show that Harrissin had also collected 995gms from his gold,” said a police officer Sahar.
“The gold was safe until March but was lost in April.
The theft was revealed after Harrissin filed firs with police because it was not permitted to collect gold on July 3, and an investigation was carried out by customs airport,” the officer said.
Initially, customs claimed Harrissin had collected gold.
But when Harrissin showed them the receipt of detention, customs authorities passed electronic records and knew that Gurjar had committed a violation.
Police said Gurjar was called for an investigation, and after confirming his role, the customs department suspended him.
“Customs restored gold from Gurjar and handed it to Harrissin after taking a written record that he had received valuables,” police said.
Gurjar has been sent to detention after the police detention three days.
