Kolkata: Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay (85) has become a fellow Sahitya Academy, 33 years after he won the Sahitya Academy award for his ‘Manabjamin’ novel.
Eight authors were chosen this year for prestigious fellowship.
Ruskin bonds, M Leelavathy, Bhalchandra Nemade, Tejwant Singh Gill, Swami Rambhadracharya and Indira Parthasarathy are others.
The General Council of the Sahita Academy met under the leadership of his president Chandrashekhar bayar on Saturday and announced the names, considered the highest honor for senior writers.
Among the authors of Bengal, the people chosen in the past were Subhas Mukhopadhyay and Nirendranath Chakraborty.

Mukhopadhyay began his literary career with a short story ‘Jaltaraka’ in 1959.
His first novel was ‘Ghunpoka’ published eight years later.
Among other popular work is ‘parthibo’, ‘Nayan Shyama’, ‘Parapar’, ‘Durbin’, ‘Ekadashi O Bhoot’, among others.
‘Manojder Adbhut Bari’ is his first novel for children.
In addition to the Sahitya Academy award, the other major award he won was the Vidyasagar Award, which was given to him in 1985 because of his contribution to children’s literature, and Banga Bibhushan award in 2012.
The number of Sahitya Academy Fellows did not exceed 21.
