PARIS: Former world number one Angelique Kerber’s bad record in the French Open obtained no assistance on Sunday if the German was phased out at the first round by Ukrainian qualifier Anhelina Kalinina.
In a sign the 26th seed, that hasn’t made it beyond the quarter-finals here despite winning another three Grand Slams after each, isn’t a high title on clay, Kerber was advised to play the exterior court 14.
She bowed out with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat because of her third largest reduction in a row over the Paris dirt.
“She began nicely and had nothing more to lose, although it took me a while to get in the competition,” Kerber said later.
In her past six attempts she’s neglected to make it beyond the opening round on five events.
Kerber is currently eager to perform a surface where she fares much better.
“I will attempt to learn in the game now since I played well the past couple of weeks and that I had great games,” she explained.
“I really did the very best preparation I could perform in the past couple of months about clay, but yeah, it is nice, and today I am looking forward to Wimbledon for the grass court season, plus it seems far better for me personally, so I am glad that another Grand Slam is about grass.
