Sarnath’s 23 years waiting for a place in the UNESCO list grow longer

Varanasi: Rudresreswara Temple, (also known as Ramappa Temple) near Warangal in Telangana has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list on Sunday, but the Ancient Buddha Sarnath site in Varanasi has been left behind for more than two decades to be included in the World Heritage List.
Sarnath’s proposal was submitted in the cultural category by the Indian Archaeological Survey (ASI) in July 1998, and has since been on the tentative list of UNESCO, while the Ramappa Temple, the 13th century Marvel Engineering named architecture, Ramappa, was proposed by the government as the only nomination To tag the UNESCO World Heritage Site for 2019.
After reaching enlightenment in the Bodh Style (Bihar), the Buddha has reported his first sermon and sets the wheel of the Dhamma in Sarnati in Varanasi.
Located about 8 km from the Varanasi headquarters, Sarnath has several monuments, which are divided into two groups.
Under the ‘A’ Chaukhandi Stupa group and under the ‘B’ group all other monuments on sites including stupas, monasteries, temples, etc.
Chaukhandi Stupa is a high brick structure crowned with an octagon tower.
According to the description mentioned in the tentative list, the octagonal tower is the Mughal monument built by the government, the son of King Todarmal in 1588 AD to commemorate Humayun’s visit to this place.
The second group, which contains remnants of several stupas, monasteries and columns of the Ashokan built in bricks and stones and datable from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century, forming the main and important segments of the site.
Stupa Dharamrajika column Ashokan, Dhameka Stupa, the remnants of the temple and a series of monasteries and nazar stupas are the remnants of the most important sites.
“We have prepared the Buddha Sarnath site document for the main list of UNESCO World Heritage and sent it to the Directorate of 2020,” Superintending Archaeologist ASI Sarnath Circle NK Sinha to Ti, Monday.
According to sources, documents have not been sent to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for nominations in the inheritance list.
Meanwhile, the banks of the Varanasi Iconic River have also been included in the UNESCO World Heritative List on April 13 this year after the proposal was handed over by Indian’s permanent delegation to UNESCO.
According to operational guidelines, it is mandatory to place any monuments / sites in the tentative list before being considered for the final nomination sin.
According to the rules, any country can submit nominated sin after one year is on the tentative list.
