SBI halts ATM cash withdrawal in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Indian’s largest bank the State Bank of India (SBI) has halted functioning of its ATMs across Tamil Nadu, after a two-membered gang exploited technical flaws and looted at least Rs 48 lakh.
SBI customers cannot withdraw money from the ATMs, as the bank management decided to shut down the ATM operations as a precautionary measure.
Earlier this week, the bank put out posters at ATM centres with the message that cash withdrawal facility has been temporarily disabled in recyclers; i.e., cash deposit machines (CDM) due to some technical error.
The CDMs can be used as ATMs as well.
The bank had asked its customers to use the ATM for cash withdrawal instead.
However, now ATMs are not available for cash withdrawal.
SBI chief general manager R Radhakrishna told media: “As a measure to curtail further loss, we have disabled all machines which have problems.
Currently, these machines will not dispense cash.
The theft took place only through one type of cash deposit machine.” A special team has been formed led by additional commissioner N Kannan to catch the thieves.
