Chennai: With a rain holiday extended for two more days on 10 and 11 November, schools and colleges in the city turn to online teaching mode.
Given the warning of heavy rainfall, the government said Tuesday local holidays for educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai.
Students in Chennai and neighboring districts do not attend physical classes due to rain holidays and festivals.
“We want to connect with our students and don’t want them to have other long gaps in learning,” V Shanthi, a higher vidyodaya principal in Nagar.
Many attend online classes to prepare for the exam, he added.
Higher MCC Middle School in Chetpet also announced that attending online classes is not mandatory.
“Teachers and children affected by rain and face problems such as water logging and power outages can choose out of online classes,” said GJ Manohar, Principal.
The school has started an online class for class VI to XII.
The teacher said that their pandemic experience was useful during the rain because they could switch to online classes easily.
Colleges also allow lecturers to take online classes during the rain holidays.
“Hods are given the power to do online classes from Wednesday.
If the presence is 80% and above, the class will be held.
If it is low, faculty members can cancel the class,” said S Santhosh Baboo, Principal of Dg Vaishnav College.
“Our class conducts classes in mixed mode to maintain social distance.
Now, it will be completely online where the classes will be done.
Physical class will continue after the situation settled,” said Lilian Jasper, Christian school principal.
Anna University also rescheduled a physical induction program for first year students.
