Polish scientists have found the genes they say more than double the risk of falling severe illness, or even dying from Covid-19.
The Ministry of Health in Warsaw expects the discovery to help identify the most risky people of disease, which has killed more than 100,000 people in Poland alone.
It also plans to enter genetic tests when playing patients for potential Covid-19 infections as soon as they end in June.
Research from Medical University Bialystok estimates that genes can be present at around 14% of the Polish population, compared to around 9% in Europe and 27% in India.
This is the fourth most important factor that determines the severity of the disease after age, weight and gender, he said.
Genetic tests “can help to identify better people, in terms of infection, maybe at risk of acute disease, even before infection develops,” said Marcin Moniuszko, a professor who was responsible for this study, which was brought with the participation of almost 1,500 poles.
The ministry does not say whether research has been reviewed by peer-reviewed.
This discovery can explain one of the reasons – in addition to vaccination doubts – behind the victim killed Covid-19 countries.
Mortality of average excess during a pandemic above 20%, one of the worst results in the European Union, Eurostat Data Show.
