KOLKATA/DIGHA: Cyclone Yaas has ravaged resorts round the coastal belt in Digha and adjacent shores, dealing another setback to the country’s tourism sector that is already hit hard by constraints to control the spread of Covid-19. Since Yaas made landfall in Arabian Odisha, water in the ocean gushed to the resorts and overwhelmed the floor tiles and the first floors of possessions constructed across the shores. Based on reports, New Digha, in which the hotels and hotels are located just a few metres from the shore, are the worst affected because water inundated the very first couple of floors inside one hour of their landfall. The owners and workers, none of whom are in the possessions because of Covid limitations, said it’s left behind a series of destruction together with furniture, electronics and insides getting ruined. “The devastation is enormous. Most properties are overrun. Because the majority of the owners and workers aren’t in the place it isn’t easy to estimate the specific quantity of harm. But reports from local individuals and several workers who remained back are indicating a very gloomy story,” explained Diprodas Chatterjee, joint secretary of the Digha Hoteliers’ Association. The shore from Digha into Khejuri has been 71 kilometres extended with many beach destinations popular with tourists out of Kolkata. There are more than 1,100 resorts throughout the shore many of which are situated in Digha and New Digha. “The arrangements of a number of these smaller resorts have been partly damaged also,” explained an official at the government. Mandarmani was the 2nd worst hit spot following Old Digha where many hotels were also overwhelmed. “The water hasn’t only damaged the walls and also the landscapes. From furniture to appliances, from insides upholstery, then nothing has been lefthanded. For more than 6 hours was 8 to ten feet water in the resorts. It began receding just after 7 pm,” explained Debu Das Mahapatra, secretary of Mandarmani Hoteliers’ Association. At South 24 Parganas, the hotels and hotels in the coastal regions have never been affected so poorly. “In reality in Sagar Island and Bakkhali we changed villagers to resorts to safeguard them in the cyclone,” explained Bankim Hazra, ministry of Sunderbans events at the country authorities.
