New Delhi: To ensure that transgender passengers traveling with Metro Delhi gain unrestriated access to the toilet at the Metro station, they have been allowed to access separate toilets at the station that are intended only for different passengers until now.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has made provisions to allow access to transgender passengers to separate toilets at their stations, which until now are intended for different passengers only, Anuj Dayal, Executive Director (Corporate Communication), DMRC, claimed.
“In its efforts to provide safe space and prevent gender discrimination against transgender, Delhi Metro based on priority has established its existing toilet only to Divynagjans so far, to be accessed by transgender too,” Dayal said.
At present, Metro Delhi has a separate 347 special toilet, which is an additional regular toilet for other passengers at the Delhi Metro Station which is spread on the network in NCR.
“To guide the transgender to this toilet, bilingual boards (in English and Hindi), along with symbols for both ‘people with disabilities’ and ‘transgender’ have been installed adjacent to this toilet,” Dayal said.
“In addition, the provisions of this separate toilet, each transgender who wants to use gender-based toilets in accordance with the identified gender will also continue to do so,” he added.
DMRC officials said that the corporation was also in the process of reflecting ways to identify a special location to provide separate public toilet facilities at the upcoming station as part of the phase-IV project.
The capital received the first special toilet complex for transgender people when the New Delhi City Council opened one across from Shastri Bhawan in June this year under the mission of Swachh Bharat.
This complex also has toilet facilities for different people and regular users.
