Belgrade: President of Serbia on Thursday praised the Tennis Star Novak Djokovic “big battle” on his offer to play in Australia Open even though it was not vaccinated by Covid-19.
A Australian Federal Court last month decided to cancel the world number one visa after a day of fighting on the rules of the country’s Covid-19 entry, forcing him to miss the grand slam tournament and returned to Serbia.
“Thank you for the big battle you are fighting for in Australia,” said Aleksandar Vucic to Djokovic during the meeting in Belgrade.
Vucic, a populist bidding for re-election in April, said he spoke with Djokovic as soon as he heard about problems in Australia and told him to go home.
“And then I saw how …
he was ready to fight not only for himself, but for his country,” Vucic said.
Djokovic, who had previously refused to talk about events in Australia, told Vucic he was grateful for his support, added that he would discuss the public in seven to 10 days.
“You have stood behind me and puts yourself in a political position compromised in international relations, and I …
very grateful.
I will remember that,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic treatment has been described as “embarrassing” by the government in Belgrade and has a deteriorating relationship between Serbs and Australia.
