JAKARTA: Indonesian savings are looking for 11 people who are still lost after the ferry of the passenger sank off the coast of Bali in the rough sea, killing at least seven, the authorities said on Wednesday.
Dozens of survivors were picked from water Tuesday night after KMP Yunicee, carrying 57 passengers and crew, off near Port Gilimanuk at the west end of Holiday Island.
It has traveled across the narrow strait from Java.
But 11 people still lost on Wednesday while the authorities confirmed that they had pulled on seven dead people from the waters, updating the previous toll.
“We are still looking for missing,” said Bali Search and Rescue Chief Gede Darmada.
“Last night, the rescue was hampered by low visibility and high waves.” It was not clear what caused the accident.
Marine accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where many use ferries and other ships to travel despite poor safety standards.
In 2018, around 160 people drowned when the ferry slumped into one of the deepest lakes in the world on the island of Sumatra.
And more than 300 people are expected to sink in 2009 when the ferry sank between Sulawesi and Kalimantan.
