Mumbai: He might have been appointed as captain for the white ball series that will come in Sri Lanka but Senior Openers Shikhar Dhawan, just like the other beginners will also audition for the opening reserve slot on the side of the Indian T20 World Cup, feels the former loose test.
While Dhawan has become certainty in a 50-over format, he hasn’t really become a regular feature on the national side of the T20 but the back-to-back IPP show has brought it back to the calculation to get a slot with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.
“Shikhar Dhawan will be very clear that he must use this opportunity – especially considering the T20 World Cup, there is so much strict competition,” said Laxman on the Star Sports Show ‘Plan’.
“So, when he was excited to become the captain of the Indian team – and anyone would proudly lead their country – but the focus was to score ran and put his place in a safe position,” Laxman said.
With Captain Virat Kohli also opened the RCB at the IPL, it was increasingly difficult for Dhawan to make the inroad into the shortest format squad.
“There is Rohit Sharma and Kl Rahul – established opening of Batsmen.
Virat Kohli, very clearly mentioned that he wanted to open in T20 format.
So, Shikhar Dhawan must be among the running,” added the former stylish right hand batsman of Hyderabad.
Dhawan, who led the Indian team for the first time, during a pre-departure press conference, said that it was a great honor for him to be the captain of the Indian team and he was waiting for him.
However, in the same vein, Laxman felt that Southpaw was valued because of his consistency.
“He (Dhawan) is being appreciated because of his consistent appearance for the Indian team, especially in Cricket Ball White – and he is the most experienced player in this squad,” Laxman signed.
