Pune: Six months after a devastating fire occurred on March 14 at the British era Shivaji Market at Pune Cantonment, annihilating 17 fish and five poultry stalls, working to renovate the structure of the inheritance trapped for the desire of funds.
The Pune Cantonment Board which is tied with cash cannot increase enough funds to start repairs, needed for the safety of the residents of Pune Cantonment who visit the market every day, and for kiosk owners.
Chief Executive Pune Cantonment Pune Cantonment (PCB) officer Amit Kumar said that the total work cost was RS2.5 Crore, and they could not start work due to lack of funds.
“We should deposit RS1.25 Crore with the District Administration to get the remaining RS 1.25 Crore funds from him.
However, we cannot produce these funds.
We have notified all vendors operating in the market to pay rented fees delayed by RS25 Lakh , but they failed to do it until now, “he said.
Pune Cantonment Mla Sunil Kamble said that Rs 25 Lakh from the MLA fund was sent to the Cantonment board recently.
“I have also done two meetings with Cantonese Vendors and Authority in the past.
However, there is no progress on the project so far.
I will hold another meeting with them,” he added.
Kumar said they had received funds from MLA and were waiting for RS25 lakh from the vendor.
“The board will keep the rest of the RS75 lakh from the budget,” he added.
Manzur Shaikh, President of the Market Market Association, said that they had paid RS23 Lakh to PCB, so far.
“Many traders face problems on the market because of being pending repairs.
Council Cantonment must show more involvement in this project to complete at least the earliest basic improvement.
Kiosk owners have run their business in these poor conditions from these kiosks,” Shaikh said.
Shashikant Pardeshi, who manages a fish kiosk on the market, said he now operates from open areas due to damage to the fish part.
“We have paid all the rental contributions to the Cantonment board.
Market is in poor condition.
Need greater attention to get basic work standards,” he said.
Regular visitors also said the Cantonment board did not make enough efforts to tidy up the market.
They say that the market is an insecure place and requires total repairs.
Samir Shaikh, a regular visitor to the market, said, “The Board has no control over the daily market function.
There is no discipline between vendors operating in this place.
They do not maintain cleanliness.
If we show it, they are rude,” Netraprakash Bhog, lawyer And the old population of Pune Camp, said that the Canton council was responsible for lowering this market standard.
He said, “For years, it has not received enough attention to keep the market in good condition.
Once upon a time, the place is known for its hygiene and architectural value.
Now, it’s not hygienic and chaotic.”
