Noida: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday approved the naming of Noida stadium shooting range after Chandro Tomar, also known as ‘Shooter Dadi’.
“The shooting range in Noida will now be known as ‘Chandro Tomar ji’, an eminent shooter, a symbol of strength and women’s empowerment.
Renaming the shooting range after ‘Chandro Tomar Ji’, is in line with the spirit of UP Government’s “Mission Shakti” campaign, which is a tribute to mother Shakti,” said a tweet from CM Yogi’s official Twitter handle.
The move comes a day after TOI reported that a demand had been raised by Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh.
He had written to the CM urging him to name the shooting range after Tomar.
The 89-year-old from Johri village in Bagpat district of western Uttar Pradesh had won more than 30 national championships after she turned 60.
She died on April 30 of Covid-related complications.
“The CM has approved naming the Noida shooting range after Chandro Tomar ji and this will go a long way in inspiring the women of the region, especially those from the rural belt,” said MLA Singh.
“Chandro ji was from a small village in Bagpat who got national fame when she won over 30-35 awards.
She fought against all odds and it was her sheer determination and will power that made her rise to fame both in the country and outside.
A shooting range named after her is a fitting tribute to her achievements,” he added.Tomar was born on January 10, 1932.
She was more than 60 years old when she picked up the gun for the first time.
