When burning, permafrost below it melts faster, turning wood to swamps.
Scientists said fires had been accelerated in the past three years, threatening the sustainability of Taiga ecosystems.
“If we don’t have a forest, we don’t have life,” said Magaras Resident Maria Nogovitsina.
Four days of traveling in Yakutia this month revealed sentiment that the government did not understand the state of the people.
Instead of accepting that climate change is blame, many recurrent conspiracy theories, among them that fires are determined by bent officials.
