Madurai: The marked silver coins marked had been found on the Archaeological site Keeladi in Sivaganga District in Tamil Nadu.
Coins have the numbers of the sun, month, bulls and dogs on the side of the one (front) and semicircles and signs – which look like Tamil “ ” letters – on the other side (back) side.
Weigh 2.20 grams.
Minister of Industry, Development of Tamil and Archaeology Thangam Thennarasu said that this coin showed that the occupants of Keedi were the trading community.
This coin is probably proof of trade owned by the Keeladi with the North Indian community, the Minister said.
“The coin design has made archaeologists believe that Keeladi civilization precedes the time of the Maunya Empire,” Minister said.
Coins are found at a depth of 146 cm.
The Department of Archaeological State Tamil Nadu was carrying out the seventh phase of excavation in Keeladi where civilization was said to have developed on the banks of the Vaigai River 2,600 years ago.
