World number Three Simona Halep has become the newest big name tennis player to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics after Rumania said he would not recover from a calf injury in time.
Halep, who also left Wimbledon last week, joined the grand slam champion 23 times, Serena Williams, Male No.
3 Rafa Nadal and open champion last year Dominic Thiem in missed the Tokyo match, which began on July 23.
“Nothing brings me more proud than representing Romania, but unfortunately the recovery of my calf injury needs more time and I have made a decision to withdraw from the Olympics this summer,” Halep tweeted on Monday.
In May, the 29-year-old player came out of the Claycourt program in Rome after taking an injury during the second round match against Angelique Kerber and then was forced to miss the Frenchman open.
“After the disappointment losing French Open and Wimbledon had to miss the Olympics very difficult to digest, but I was determined to return stronger,” he added.
Halep experienced a loss of opening at the London Olympics in 2012 and missed the Rio 2016 game because of worries over the Zika virus.
