PANAJI: Goa has a total mangrove 27 SQKM cover, which has risen 1 SQKM for the past year, in accordance with Indian Forest Report (ISFR) 2021 from the Indian forest survey, released on Thursday.
Goa is among only 11 states and the United States in the country with the presence of mangroves.
However, reports show that caves do not have mangrove patches that are categorized as ‘very dense’.
Of the 27 SQKM Mangroves, 21 SQKM is a ‘quite dense’ mangrove forest while 6 SQKM is an open mangrove forest.
Mangroves that are quite dense are those with canopy density between 40% and 70% and open mangroves are those with a density of canopies of 10% to 40%.
According to the ISFR report, the mangrove cave cover has multiplied since 2009.
The increase in mangroves recorded throughout India has been associated with reports mainly for natural regeneration and plantation drives.
In Goa, natural mangrove regeneration is often noted in saline ecosystems such as the Tanah Khazan, while some plantation activities have also been pioneered by the Mangrove Society of India.
Because of biodiversity and their ecological significance and their environment, conservation of mangrove ecosystems is now a focus area in India.
“In most countries, the mangrove ecosystem faces constant pressure due to the increasing population of humans in coastal areas and increasing demand for soil, wood, animal feed, firewood and other non-timber forest products.
The right management is Germane for effective mangrove conservation.
Mangrove is a rich biodiversity repository, “the ISFR report said.
In India, at this time as part of conservation efforts, steps were taken to identify selected mangrove areas for conservation, preparation of management plans, research promotion, and adopted a multidisciplinary approach to mangrove conservation involving the government, local universities, etc.
In Goa, the Coastal Zone Management Authority of the Goa has formed a mangrove committee to limit mangrove regions in the state.
