Chennai: After a prolonged neglect, Lake Sithalapkakam on the southern outskirts finally got a facelift.
The lake on Jalan Mambakkam-Medavakkam, one of the oldest in the area, has a wider deployment of 201 hectares of water and has been used for irrigation for a long time, a PWD official said, adding that the Rotary Club of Madras has taken ECO -The body’s body.
With urbanization, the amount of water used for irrigation down and the population and others began to release waste to the lake.
However, the recent sample of the lake tested by the Tamil Nadu pollution control board (TNPCB) shows and its quality is not as bad as thoughts, the official said.
The lake, which has a 7.06MCF water holding capacity (million cubic feet), now has a capacity of 5.44MC because of the encroachment and collection of lanau, the official said.
While the PWD authority has identified encroachment in the lake and has decided to take steps to evacuate and rehabilitate wild residents, the official said the illegal inlet facilitated the flow of raw waste into the body of the water.
Pancirayat Officials Sithalapakkam is in the process of building a drainage line to stop the waste stream that is not treated to the lake, he added.
Madras Rotary of Club members have been given six months to complete restoration work.
“If they can complete the job well before the emergence of northeast monsoon, it will be better,” the official said.
