New Delhi: The Indian Boxers dominated the Asian Youth Championship, recorded six gold medals along with nine silver and five bronze in the event where female competition was significantly run out of withdrawals caused by restrictions on trips related to Covid-19.
Preeti Dahiya (60kg), Sneha Kumari (66kg), Khushi (75kg) and Neha (54kg) won a gold medal in the female draw, which shrank after several teams involved travel registration due to travel restrictions.
Of the 10 women’s finalists, six directly made the final because of the small size of each draw.
Dahiya defeated Zuldyz Shayakmetova Kazakhstan 3-2, while Sneha hit Rahmah Khalfan Almurshidi UAE to force cessation.
Khushi beat funds Donday Kazakhstan 3-0 in a screaming attack last night.
World Youth Bronze-Medalist Bishwamitra Chongtham (51kg) and Vishal (80kg) are the winners of gold in men’s competition.
The silver winner among women is Preeta (57kg), Khushi (63kg), Tanisha Sandhu (81kg), Nivedi (48kg), Tamanna (50kg) and Simran (52kg).
Vishvanath Suresh (48kg), Vanshaj (63.5kg) and Jaydeep Care (71kg) ended with a silver medal in a male competition.
Five Indian boxers, including a woman, previously claimed a bronze medal on the youth after losing in the semi-finals.
Among men, Daksh (67kg), Deepak (75kg), Abhimanyu (92kg) and Safe Singh Biht (92 + kg) bronze medal when Lashu Yadav (70kg) ended with bronze in the women’s category.
In the last edition of the Asian Youth Championship, which was held at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, India had claimed 12 medals, including five gold.
The gold medalist in the youth category was given with USD 6,000 while USD 3,000 and USD 1,500 were given to the winner of the silver and bronze medal.
India previously won eight gold medals, five silver and six bronze in junior competitions held simultaneously for the first time.
Overall, India took 39 medals from a combined event, 14 of them gold.
“As a federation, we are committed to identifying and promoting more young people from all over the country, ensuring the best training and guidance to study them into future champions at the elite level,” said Federation of Boxing President Ajay Singh.
“I am sure the valuable experience in the big tournament will help these boxers to carve a strong road for themselves,” he added.
