Chennai: Madras High Court on Thursday directed the state government to remove all statues of leaders installed on the road and other public places within six months and create ‘park leaders’ to move them.
Justice S M Subramaniam ordered the government not to give further permission to install structures or statues on the highway, public places, and the field of Poromboke soil, and direct the country for the frame guidelines to establish statues.
The court also ordered the government to create ‘park leaders’ in several places throughout the state.
Only statues established with proper permits must be moved and maintained in the park and the cost of keeping the statue be restored from those who have founded it, the court said.
The judge passed the commandment of the request transferred by M Veeraraghavan challenging the notification issued by Tahsildar Arakonam Taluk to remove the Ambedkar statue which was established on the Porambow Meeting without permission.
Refusing to comfort the request, Subramaniam Justice said: “Erection of statues made on the desire and fantasy of political, communal, religious, religious, regional, regional and groups in various forms.” No doubt, they have the right to celebrate the glory of the leaders.
However, while establishing statues in public places, regulations are very important as ideas, ideologies and practices may be different from one group to another, the judge said.
“Unity in diversity is the principle of the constitution and glory of our great nation.
This is a constitutional mandate, equality, non-discrimination, regulation is a constitutional interest in preserving unity in the principle of diversity and to march towards dynamic democracy, “added the court.
