Kolkata: Hawkers continues to break the boundaries on the sidewalk in a new city, many things disappoint locals.
“Unauthorized encroachment on the sidewalk has blocked the drainage line with garbage.
This has caused severe puddle in the city this time,” said Sameer Sharma, a resident of DLF Heights New Town.
“We are the worst patient.
Our complex wall has been damaged due to this encroachment.
The trend to penetrate these sidewalks seems to increase,” said Debashis Basu, a resident of the Animikha Housing Complex.
The new city of Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has established 800 rehabilitation stalls and began taking applications from vendors who wanted to be shifted to new sites.
But the process has been postponed after the objection of the local handmaster union asking why those who previously handed over their land to Hidco would not be accommodated.
NKDA has come up with the rules that only the existing vendors can submit rehabilitation to stalls.
“We are discussing this problem to find out how the policy of this can be framed,” said an NKDA official.
The authorities are working on plans to establish G + 1 building for vendors and street vendors to do business systematically.
