Chennai: A 19-year-old cellphone snatch escaped from the Royapettah government hospital when the police took him there for a medical on Tuesday night.
The police conducted a search and secured it last night.
The defendant has been identified as Kamalesh Virugambakkam.
He has some cases delayed against him, according to the police.
On Monday afternoon, K latha from Saligramam, who managed a shop in Vadadatani, sent his 14-year-old son after giving him his cellphone because he had to attend online class.
In Majith Nagar, two young men intercepted the boy and grabbed the cellphone from him.
Based on complaints, Virugambakkam police registered a case and secured one of the suspects, identified as Kamalesh, and arrested the cellphone from him.
On Tuesday night, he was taken to GRH for a medical test.
Kamalesh told police personnel who looked after him that he had to go to the toilet.
They let it go.
Then, they realized that the defendant escaped.
They launched hunting for him.
He is guaranteed from the nearest playground early on Wednesday.
He was returned in judicial custody.
