Heavy snow winter storm packaging is expected to roll into the Columbia District, North Virginia and the center of Maryland last night, bringing at least 3 to 7 inches of snow to the area until Monday afternoon.
National weather services issued a winter storm warning for the area starting at 1am to 4pm on Monday.
Wind gusts up to 35 MPH (56 kph) are estimated and the trip is expected to be very difficult because of dangerous conditions, said weather service.
The weather prediction center says 2 inches (5 centimeters) per hour snow can fall in several areas, and the snow thunder is possible.
Total local snowfall can reach 10 inches (25 centimeters).
Snow began to fall on Sunday night in several parts of Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Winter storm warnings also apply in some parts of North Alabama and South Tennessee, and portion of Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.
The impact of the winter storm is estimated throughout the south, Appalachian states and into mid-Atlantic, according to the National Weather Service.
In Washington, the US personnel management office announced that the federal office in the area will be closed on Monday.
Emergency employees and telework employees will continue to work, OPM said on the website.
