Ranchi: Jharkhand is ready to add MW green power through a solar resistant solar project that is connected to the first grid installed on the Sikidiri canal.
This project was a small step towards achieving the target of Mammoth installing 1,995 MW solar power in 2022, which was determined by Niti Aayog.
Jharkhand has been lagging behind in fulfilling the obligations of renewable forces (RPO) for years.
The installation work of the Canal-Top Solar Project is being built on the Sikidiri canal under the Ranchi District, 20 km from the State Headquarters, it should begin this month and after completion, it will be operational in January 2022.
Speaking with TOI, the Director Project, Development Agency Jharkhand’s renewable energy, Bijay Kumar Sinha said that Vikram Solar based in Kolkata implemented the project.
“We have collected data from the irrigation department about the length of the canal available in the state, which is around 1,600 km and after completing our first project, the idea is to cover as much canal space,” he said.
The state government has focused on the Canal-Top solar power project to resolve the soil crisis for the installation of photovoltaic solar panels (PV).
The land for installing solar panels is a big challenge in terms of costs and availability as well.
Sinha said that for the 2 MW project, around 750 MTs canals will be borne using the PV panel.
“There is always the possibility of increasing further capacity by increasing the solar panel cover,” he said.
The power of solar installation will be evacuated at a voltage level of 33kv to the grid.
While the first Top Canal Factory was assigned in the district of Mehsana Gujarat in 2012, the idea of utilizing the upper canal space received support from the Ministry of Energy and Renewable because it helped avoid unnecessary delays in the process of regulating solar crops.
With the support of MNE since 2014, seven countries have installed around 66 MW solar canal plants.
Jreda has drifted the tender in this case in February 2019 but in the absence of a response from the eligible party, the tender was released again with deadlines in September 2019 with a project fee that was slightly reduced.
After completing the formality, Vikram Solar was finally selected for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) with Operation and Maintenance (O & M) responsibilities for a period of 10 years.
Jreda will enter into the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Jharkhand Bijli Vitaran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) to sell power to the grid, after production begins in January next year.
