MADRID: Nearly 5,000 people in quarantine after vacationing high school students triggered the main Covid-19 plague on Malitanean Island Mallorca, said a senior official Monday.
The authorities have confirmed almost 1,200 positive cases of the plague, the Spanish emergency health response coordinator, said Fernando Simon.
Teenagers partying celebrating the end of their university’s entrance examination last week created “perfect breeding places” for viruses when they mixed with other people from around Spain and abroad, Simon said at a press conference.
Mallorca’s health authority conducted mass testing in hundreds of students after the outbreak became clear.
It is believed to have spread as hundreds of partying students who gather in concerts and street parties.
Officials have so far traced 5,126 tourists to Mallorca.
More than 900 Covid-19 cases in eight regions in Mainland Spain have been traced back to the plague.
Infected teen scores are still on the island.
Some are stored in their hotel rooms, while others have been transferred to hotels used by local authorities for their isolation with mild symptoms or alleged cases.
Simon noted that teenagers may be around 45 and 55 years old, and not all from the age group have received a dose of Covid-19 vaccine, which can lead to community transmission.
