MADRID: Spanish police said on Thursday it held the fourth suspect over the murder of Samuel Luiz, who was beaten to death in the northern city of Coruna on Saturday in a suspected anti-gay crime that triggered mass protests throughout the country.
“He was a man between 20 and 25 years old and he was accused of improper murder and appropriation,” the Spanish National Police said on a Twitter account on Thursday.
The man was a friend of three other suspects, who was arrested earlier this week, a police officer told Reuters.
He allegedly took Luiz cellphone.
Luiz, a 24-year-old nurse assistant, was killed in early Saturday outside the nightclub.
A witness told Luiz striker La Sexta TV station shouted with homophobics while beating.
The protesters took to the streets of Spain’s main cities on Monday night to vent their anger in murder and demand better protection for gay rights.
