Mumbai: After the murder of a brutal rape of a 32-year-old woman in Sakinaka, Mumbai police have announced the formation of a special squad to prevent sexual harassment to women in public places.
The Nirda squad is intended “to create fear in the minds of criminals and inspire respect for women,” said internal circular for the style signed by the Police Commissioner Hemant Nagral.
The police have also binded with Mpower, an organization working in the mental health room, for counseling victims of sexual violence and child sexual abuse and juvenile delinquency.
The Nirda squad will be formed in every police station and will consist of a female officer and two police officers, at least one of them a woman, besides a driver.
They will be assigned a vehicle patrolling cellular and the work of all Nirda teams will be monitored at the regional level by a female commissioner assistant who will become a nodal officer.
“Troops will undergo two-day training and one of their responsibilities is to collect intelligence in areas where hostels of women, shelter, children’s homes, or orphanages are located.

“NIRBHAYA BOX” will be placed in schools and colleges where girls can post their complaints to the squad to overcome them.

The Commissioner also instructed the squad to prepare a list of elderly women who lived alone in the jurisdiction of the police station and to visit them to improve their complaints.
The squad will be trained using an electronic recording device such as a pen camera that can provide evidence.
The squad must have a separate list to record actions taken by them and register must be examined by Nodal officers.
Every month, the best forces will be valued by Commissioners.
