CHANDIGARH: Senior advocate Harbhagwan Singh Walia, who had the distinction of being Advocate General (AG) of both the states of Punjab and Haryana, breathed his last on Friday.
A practicing lawyer at the Punjab and Haryana high court and the Supreme Court (SC), had represented several high profile cases involving senior political leaders and interstate disputes including the contentious, Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal dispute between Haryana and Punjab, and the Sahajdhari Sikhs case.
During the time of Partap Singh Kairon and Jawaharlal Nehru, he was associated with land reforms too.
Harbhagwan Singh was born on February 22, 1928 in Jind State.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and daughter Justice Anita Chaudhary, who had recently retired as a Judge of Punjab and Haryana high court.
Former Haryana CM and leader of the opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed grief at the demise of Harbhagwan Singh.
Expressing his condolences, Hooda said that Harbhagwan had also worked with his father and always stood firm in every situation.
“He made his invaluable contribution in the establishment of Haryana and always fought in the interest of the state.
I have today lost a close friend and an important family member,” said Hooda who was closely associated with Harbhagwan Singh.
The Punjab and Haryana high court bar association also paid tribute to the departed soul.
