Colombo: All civil servants in Sri Lanka were asked to return to work from Monday despite the warning from the health authority that the threat of a very contagious Delta variant was very alive.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has ordered a round cancellation that allows state officials to work from home, his office said on Friday.
“Because the majority of civil servants have been vaccinated, priority must be given to restore normal to public services,” said the Presidential Office in a statement.
The order has come despite the warning from the health authority that the threat of Delta variant, was first identified in India, very alive.
The doctor’s trade union said the island was on the verge of recording 4,000 cases per day immediately because of the Delta variant, up from an average of 1,500 daily infections that were recorded at this time.
“There are more than 600 deaths for the last 10 days or more,” said Dr.
Prasad Colombage.
Yesterday, around 2,370 new infections were recorded.
The Public Health Supervisory Union said the arrangement in vaccination centers was far from satisfying.
“We see a large number of people gather in vaccination centers, truly ignoring health guidelines,” said Spokesman of Upul Rohana.
