Colombo: Sri Lanka manages Pfizer shots to the people left behind waiting after receiving their first astrazeneca dose earlier this year.
Mixing two vaccines is still studied for its effectiveness, but Sri Lanka’s health officials agreed because of severe astrazeneca shortages.
Sri Lanka received 26,000 pfizer doses on Monday as the first batch of 5 million shots to be received this year.
It began to overthrow them Wednesday to residents of 55 and older in the capital of Colombo.
About 384,000 people were fully vaccinated before Sri Lanka ran out of astrazeneca doses with 540,000 people were only vaccinated.
Channa Jayasumana, State Minister who oversees Pharmacy, said that getting Pfizer as the second dose was optional and the consignment of the AstraZeneca vaccine was expected this month.
Sri Lanka has also used Sinopharm and Sputnik V to vaccinate people against Covid-19.
Sri Lankan has seen a sharp increase in Coronavirus infection and death since April.
It has recorded 266,499 cases with 3,268 fatality as a whole.
