Colombo: Sri Lanka on Wednesday issued the most expensive gold coins to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, underlining the close relationship between countries.
The 1,000-rupee commemoration coins ($ 5) will sell for 222,000 rupees from Monday, the Sri Lankan central bank said.
“Coins have been issued at the request of the Sri Lankan government as award for old friendship and mutual trust between the two countries,” said the bank.
Sri Lanka further turned to China for financing and diplomatic support in recent years, encouraging India and the United States to express concern.
One side of 12 grams of coins (0.42 ounces) marks the commemoration of the Chinese party while others celebrate 65 years of diplomatic bonds between the two countries and describes Colombo theaters built with Chinese financing.
Sri Lanka released the last gold coin to mark 50 years of independence from England in 1998, it was only two third-thirds of Chinese birthday coins.
Colombo also has never issued coins to commemorate political parties.
Beijing has made a trade and diplomatic breakthrough in South Asia in recent years.
In 2017, it could not pay a large Chinese loan, Sri Lanka allowed the holder of a Chinese merchant merchant to take over the Port of the Hambantota, which stretched the busiest east-west shipping route in the world, with a rental of 99 years.
