Sri Lanka seeks UN Aid in Analyzing damage from Boat fire

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s government is seeking assistance from both the United Nations and other nations in analyzing the ecological damage brought on by a fire in a container ship carrying substances that’s sinking off its own capital, officials said Tuesday.
Even the 12-day fire at the MV X-Press Pearl ravaged the boat, destroyed almost all of its freight and brought severe pollution from the sea and also a very long stretch of this island country’s renowned beaches.
State Minister of Urban Development and Coast Conservation Nalaka Godahewa stated that the government has contacted the UN and several other nations because”experience within the nation is not enough to correctly figure out the harm” He didn’t recognize the other nations.
The UN has vowed to ship three specialists that are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, Godahewa stated.
An individual will evaluate the harm suffered by the market.
On Saturday, Sri Lanka said it’s looking for an equal claim of about $40 million in the boat’s owner, X-Press Feeders, to pay a portion of the cost of battling the fire.
The fire broke out about the Singapore-flagged boat on May 20 as it was anchored about 9.5 nautical miles (18 km ) northwest of Colombo and waiting to go into the port.
Even the Sri Lankan navy thinks the blaze was brought on by its own chemical freight, which comprised 25 lots of nitric oxide.
Debris including burnt fiberglass and heaps of vinyl pellets have contaminated nearby shores, and there are worries that a trickle of the rest of the compounds and petroleum on the boat may devastate marine life.
Authorities extinguished the flame , but the boat then started sinking and tries to dip it to deeper waters collapsed after its stern rested the seabed.
The boat remains partially submerged in waters approximately 21 meters (70 feet) deep.
Police detained the boat’s Russian captain, Tyutkalo Vitaly, on Monday.
He appeared before a magistrate and was released on bond.
The court prohibited him from leaving the nation.
The case will likely be heard again on July 1.
