Colombo: Sri Lanka will end the locking Covid-19 which was applying last month on October 1, Health Minister Kehyalliya Rambukwella said on Wednesday, even when medical professionals warned against the reopening of the unlimited state.
The key applied on August 20 after the surge in Covid-19 case would be appointed at 4am (local time) on October 1 and a new guideline aimed at limiting the spread of koronavirus further will be announced, he said.
“This condition, to be announced by health authorities, will be charged to reduce the movement of the people and curb the spread of further viruses,” said Rambukwella.
The announcement came as the Sri Lankan Medical Association (SLMA) warned that realestricted re-buaid countries would cause the resumption of transmissions.
“Because of the high number of cases, it will likely cause a faster case increase than before, despite high vaccine coverage,” SLMA said in a statement.
After weeks of persuasion by medical professionals, the government decided to force the lock in mid-August after the health facility was under tension because the third wave of the pandemic Covid-19 was raging.
The Covid-19 dead toll road, which stands below 1,000 at the end of April, soared to nearly 13,000 on Tuesday.
Health officials said there had been a decrease in the number of daily Covid-19 cases that had crossed 2,000-marks.
There were more than 900 new infections on Tuesday with 55 deaths confirmed on Monday, a decline from more than 2,000 daily cases which was largely reported in August.
