Chennai: Responding to the Chairman of the Karnataka Minister B S letter Yediyurappa which was urgent not to oppose the Mekedatu Dam project, Minister of Tamil Minister Nadu M Stalin stressed that the project was contrary to the interests of Tamil Nadu farmers and asked him not to pursue the project.
Stalin’s letter on Sunday was also silent at the request of Yeddiyurappa for bilateral talks about this problem, in a sign that TN turned off the proposal for the conversation.
The view that the Mekedatu Dam will not affect the interests of Tamil Nadu cannot be agreed because it will inhibit the flow of water from the catchment area under the Kabini and Krishnarajasagar Da, Stalin said to Yeddiyurappa.

Stalin further shows that justification by Karnataka on the need for reservoirs with storage capacity 67.18 TMC to meet 4.75 drinking water requirements is completely unacceptable, especially when Karnataka already has adequate infrastructure to take water for the purpose of drinking Bengaluru.

He said comparison MeKe project Datu with a silhalla dam and kundah is not true.
Yeddiyurappa has said in his letter that TN has not received approval from Karnataka for two projects to support the points that because TN will advance with these projects, it should not object to carnataka projects.
But Stalin said the last was a hydropower project where water was recirculated by pumping to fulfill the demand of peak power.
There is no water consumption and therefore these projects will not affect the availability for irrigation purposes or drink.
While Mekedatu, which is intended to store 67.16 TMC, will affect the quantum of water supplied to Tamil Nadu.
“I want to emphasize that the comparison of two projects that are qualitatively different is not right,” Stalin said.
“ I ask you to consider the facts above and sensitivity of this problem and very urgent you not to pursue the Mekedatu project, ” said Stalin in the letter.
