Panaji: find that “illegally extracted sand is transported fairly freely”, the Bombay High Court in Goa has provided a comprehensive direction, including to stop every truck carrying sand and sustain police personnel all the time where violations are rampant.
The court quoted two sites under the Amona bridge – Amona and Candola (PWD property) – and two more, one in Bhati and the other in Oxel-Siolim (Property Department of Fisheries).
“We have noted that rampant illegal sand mining inside and around the Amona Bridge site is conveying a danger to the foundation of the bridge itself, regardless of degrading a very sensitive ecosystem in the area,” the division bench was declared next to direct the CCTV camera installed in here in 15 days.

The High Court also directed that the canoe found parked under the Amona bridge and in Oxel-Siolim became “immediately confiscated and stored in a safe location, far from the river bank”.

It directs the police to submit a compliance report within a maximum period of seven days from the date of order, along with photos and details.
The High Court stated that the people involved in illegal sand mining were “out to deceive the authorities”.
“Unfortunately, we found that in many cases even the authorities seemed too excited to be cheated.
Therefore, if there are no steps taken against unregistered canoes parked by riverside, such canoes are always used for illegal sand mining .
