‘Stop monitoring Mekedatu; Get all the reverse permissions

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Government must make a strong case before the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Management Authority to ensure the Mekedatu Reservoir Project became a reality, not political rhetoric with Tamil Nadu experts.
Advice from irrigation experts follow the central insistence that the project requires CWMA approval.
Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekawat, on July 17, told Lok Sabha that the center had provided a nodding for detailed project reports in October 2019 and the government had sent it to CWMA for approval.
Singh repeated him at home on Thursday while answering questions by MP Hassan Prajwal Revanna and said the acceptance of CWMA was a prerequisite for the Ministry of Water Resources to consider.
Experts were disappointed that the panel had not taken a problem for discussions in 12 meetings between February 2018 and July 2021.
“Karnataka must be proactive and nodded without delay.
Entering the war-words with Tamil Nadu politicians will not help,” said Water Resources Expert Captain King Rao.
The panel has all the State of Riparian (Karnataka, TN, Kerala, Puducherry) but the project is blocked by TN.
The source said the government would increase the DPR at this month’s meeting.
However, other experts, said Karnataka do not need to wait for CWMA approval and can begin construction because the Supreme Court has not yet lived in the DPR.
“It is clear that Tamil Nadu will arouse objections in CWMA.
Karnataka must begin construction in the forest area (because the environmental permit is still delayed).
Let Tamil Nadu move the Supreme Court if you want and let the court clarify,” said Tippeswamy, a former advisor to the Head of the Minister of Irrigation.
Captain King Rao said TN did not have a case in a dispute because this project was intended to utilize Cauvery surplus water where TN did not have a claim.
“There is confusion about this since the Supreme Court, while modifying the tribunal award in 2018, did not mention the use of excess water.
Karnataka must look for pEX Court clarification about this,” he added.
However, Senior Advocate Mohan Kataraki, who appeared for Karnataka, said this project was not intended to use a surplus of water, but the government had submitted a separate petition at the Supreme Court about it.
