Chennai: Retrofitting from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus in Chennai has reduced feet space for passengers in the first few lines.
According to the BODY Building Code bus, the distance between two seats on the city bus must be at least 680 mm.
But on several buses, the gap between the driver’s cabin and the first seat is not 200 mm.
K Baskar, a public transport passenger welfare association from Tiruvallur, said, “Even a small child cannot step in or exit the first seat easily.
We are not sure what rationality is behind”.
Aluminum or steel sheets are repaired in the government depot to separate the driver’s cabin from the front row seat.
It makes everything worse.
Likewise, the seat must be repaired at least 350 mm from the bus floor or base.
But it is almost impossible for adult passengers to sit without folding legs in the chair above the rear wheels, accusing ordinary MTC users.
In response, a senior MTC official said the bus code came into force in TN in 2018.
This MTC bus was built and many operated before.
But passengers complain that even new red MTC buses cause discomfort for those who occupy the front seat.
For example, the holder is installed on the side of all the different seats on the bus to help them place their crutches.
But for some reason, this holder has been cut using a welding machine that leaves a prominent angle.
This tends to cause injury and often clothing torn, baskar added.
Passengers cannot occupy a chair even when they are empty.
This leads to further density on the MTC bus.
