Student returned RS 5L lost online to ‘Irish Official’

Thane: Police Thane helped a city-based student restore Rs 5.2 lakh that he lost to online fraudsters who posed as government officials from Ireland.
The 24-year-old Thane students who pursued a higher study at Dublin University in Ireland lost Rs 5.2 lakh to cyber fraudsters who forced him to transfer the amount to make him ‘safe’ of the hackers.
Students, who held the account together with his mother at Bank Thane, received a call on September 23, and the caller identified himself as a government officer from Ireland.
The caller told the victim that because he had visited several websites that were inappropriately banned in the US, he had been exposed to hackers who could now suck their savings from their bank accounts.
Fraudsters then convinced the victim to transfer money to his account as a precaution.
When students told his mother about the transfer, he immediately registered complaints with the Chitsar police station.
“After the registered case, investigators look for the bank account details where the victim has transferred money.
When the probe widened, it was studied that the account belonged to the branch in the Rohini Sector New Delhi,” Dr.
Vinay Rathod, DCP (Zone-5).
The police immediately communicated to the bank via email and told them about fraud.
They were told to freeze the account and transfer the number back to the victim’s account.
The action was taken in time because it would be difficult to recover the accused money accused him of transferring it to another account, a police officer said.
Police are now trying to identify and track the defendants involved in the crime.
