Pittsburgh: Two people were fired into vans outside the Pittsburgh school at the time of dismissal Wednesday afternoon, sent a 15-year-old student to the hospital where he later died, said the authorities.
Two people were reported to approach van school outside Academy Oliver Citywide and shot into it, hitting male students, Pittsburgh public school said.
There was no arrest which was immediately announced.
The police said they were reviewing the video supervision and looking for witnesses.
Oliver Citywide Academy describes itself on its website as “a full-time special education center that serves class 3-12.” School officials say all other students are safe in the building.
School is locked up for a while.
Parents from victims and other students have been told, officials said.
Police Chief Scott Schubert said that the shooting like that happened in a school was special attention.
“It’s something we don’t want, and we will do everything we can to find out who did it and take them to court,” he said.
The Mayor Ed Gainey begged anyone with information about what he called “this criminal and criminal act” to advance.
The Superintent Wayne Walters interim said support services will be given to students and staff, and the school will shift to remote instructions until Monday.
“As a former principal, I know only the possibility of events like today is what makes us awake at night,” he said.
Walters said a teacher told him that the young man had become a student at school since grade 3.
“He loved the school and he was very happy today to return to school after a long weekend and Covid closure,” Walters said.
“His smile was contagious and turned on the room.
The sense of humor was contagious, and staff members said that the staff could not be avoided now because they loved him very much.”
