Students from Japan get a virtual sense of IIT Madras

Chennai: Ten students from the Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan, have a virtual study tour of IIT Madras between 6 and 17 September, where they learn to engineer English and yoga.
Under the study tour program, Japanese students will come to IIT Madras twice a year.
Programmed allowing these students some explanations about research work in IIT-M while also giving them the opportunity to feel Chennai and visit the nearest cities.
However, this program was not organized last year due to Covid-19 pandemic.
“When the students came here physically, they were very excited because this was a new culture and they visited Japanese companies and Mamallapuram and Puducherry.
This is a pleasant experience.
To replicate it is quite difficult.
So, we add some programs like yoga together with Learning English, “said Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean (Global Engagement), IIT Madras.
Because virtual mode, the tour is limited to only 10 days.
However, the agency made it interesting even taught greetings of students in Tamil and explain traditional and cultural bonds between Japan and India.
“We must enter aspects of virtual reality so they can be taken on virtual tours on campus, research laboratories and places such as Mamallapuram.
We will work to make the experience much richer,” he added.
The Institute will also accommodate students from Singapore, England and Canada.
“We will also plan a collection of students from various countries,” said Raghunathan.
