Coimbatore: The second year’s bed students in the city have become a ray of hope for 25 slum school students located not far from Keeranatham Road in Saravanampatti.
Every day, government school students gather at one of the widespread roads Nagar around 18:20 to revise the online class and get doubts that are cleaned by their tutor Manikandan, which involves them for free.
Postgraduate students have asked City Corporation to give them the right building with electricity.
Manikandan, whose mother is also a school teacher, was first approached by ViveKanda Seva Kendram to take free tuition for slums when he was pursuing BSC Botanical at The Government Arts College.
“Because I’m free at night, I agree,” he said.
Manikandan immediately realized that the dropout rate in the area was very high, with many of them stopped learning even before class X.
“They do not understand what they are taught and therefore they cannot do their homework or do the test well in tests and exams.
As a result, their interest in the study was weaned and stopped going to school.
So, I decided to reduce the dropout rate by helping them understand lessons, do their own homework and perform well in the exam, “Manikandan said.
He has taught them for the past four years and no those who broke up during the period.
Some of his students have made him a class XI and XII too.
“Most students who attend the lecture come from class I to X,” Manikandan said.
Now after the locking limit casually, Manikandan has restarted in college by following all Covid19 protocols including wearing facial masks and maintaining social distance.
“Students need extra support now more than before, because they hardly understand 30% of what is taught online,” he said.
Manikandan has asked City Corporation to give him a room in a new building or existing, with an electrical connection – so they can have lights, fans and plug points to repair the projector to drain innovative education videos.
“At present, they study under street lights.
We face mosquito threats and cannot have a college class every time it rains.
If there is the right building, we can play free educational videos from Byjus, making learning simpler and more fun for students, “Said student beds.
