Varanasi: The doctor’s team at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Banaras Hindu (IMS-BHU), has conducted a study of the results of the patient surgery of the Toracic Empyema.
They claim that this is the first of its kind research and can help in suggest alternative medicine strategies to avoid operations.
Team, including Prof.
Siddharth Lakhotia, Dr.
Narendra Nath from the CTV department and Prof.
Ashish Verma from the Radiodiagnosis Department conducted research.
ProfoF.
Lakhotia said, “This study is about the results of empyema surgery (pus in the Torax) patient and its relationship with the clinical and radiological findings (CECT Thorax) pre-operative.
It is done to predict the results of the operation, based on pre-operative parameters so in cases where surgery may be useless, they can be subject to alternative care strategies from the beginning.
“He said that this research found it in cases where the remaining volume of the lungs affected or pain in the CECT ThorAx was more or equal to 59% of Normal lungs, opportunities for complete lung expansion after the operation are good.
This study assumes significance until now all the cases are included in the operation but, research shows ways of alternative medicine in certain cases.
He added, “it has been observed that the volume of the remnants of affected lungs (residual pulmon)) can determine the results of the surgery along with other parameters; such as the completeness of decortication (surgery is carried out to remove pus in the thorough cavity and thickened membranes, which compresses lungs and prevent it from complete expansion), there is or no air leakage from pre operative lungs.
“According to him, pre-operations of residual lung volume can be determined by the CECT Thorax (CT Morphometry – Measurement of Empiema, Lung, Pyemi membrane thickness).
In this study it was found that the volume of lung residue involved, was declared a percentage of the opposite lung volume, predicted complete expansion of lungs with sensitivity of 71% and 70% specificity.
