LONDON: Hsieh Su-Wei Taiwan claimed the Double Third Wimbledon title with a different third partner when he and Elise Mertens hung to claim victory in the final of the Marathon against Russian Duo Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina on Saturday.
Taiwan-Belgium duo saved match points on the way to claim a 3-6 7-5 9-7 victory at the court center.
It was a second double double crown for Hsieh who joined the Barbora Strycova who had recently won the title in 2019.
He also won the title in 2013 with Peng Shuai.
This time Mertens, multiple women’s multiplied players are only installed, which works with him with great effects.
Unisseded Kudermetova and Vesnina had two match points at 5-4 in the second set, the second produced an extraordinary rally which was finally won by Hsieh.
When the third set continued, Hsieh, who was 35 years old then completed the contest gripping with a backhand winner.
“It feels like seven hours,” Mertens said about a two and a half hour battle in a crowded central court.
“There is nerves but we managed well in the end.” We are very happy that we can close it.
