Mysuru: Report of the state of the state of the state or one of the country’s main water sources – Ganga, Jamuna, Narmada, et al – is being rejuvenated hardly causing many interests between the community, because such initiatives are carried out regularly by the authorities.
However, many small rivers, tributaries from their more popular and bigger colleagues, rarely get appropriate attention they get, even though they are the lives of some of the villages they experience.
This might be why the voluntary initiative carried out by a group of citizens concerned in Gundlupet Taluk, Chamarajanagar, to revive the Gundlu River – Kapila River – has forced people to stop and pay attention.
This is a river, which comes from Anjani Betta, which lends Gundlupet his name.
The river, which is part of the ecosystem around Himavad Gopalaswamy Hills, joined Kapila in Nanjangud in the MySore district.
Throughout his winding trip from Anjani Betta to Nanjiud, the river flowed through 200 villages, which was the main source of drinking water.
Unfortunately, encroachment that is not checked along the banks has changed the course of the river.
Want to save the river and ecology support, a group of individuals from Gundlupet has formed the Gundlu River Rejuvenation Committee, which is currently pioneering awareness campaigns.
Shaiila Kumar, 52, said that they launched their campaign two months ago after Gundlupet visited by the preparation of flooding, which was the result of human intervention.
“When the rain two months ago, the city of Gundlupet was flooded when Kagehalla Lake began to overflow.
It inspired us to start a conscious campaign.
We want to emulate the ‘Calvery Calling’ model to save the Gundlu River,” Kumar said.
Memorial Members of the Suresh Mouri Committee, an advocate, said that the main purpose of the campaign was to recover the river to the past glory.
“We are pleased with interest in residents to save this river,” he said.
