However, the expectations they have that the military will retreat running on Thursday, when Burhan named himself as the Head of the New Ruling Sovereign Board, triggered more punishment from the West.
In front of the new demonstration expected on Saturdays, the military, police, and paramilitary forces were deployed in large quantities in Khartoum and sealed the bridge connecting the capital to neighboring cities, AFP correspondents reported.
They also blocked the road to the Army headquarters in Khartoum, the sites of the mass protest in 2019 which lead to the overthrow of Omar Al-Bashir’s autocratic president, said the correspondent.
The United Nations asked Sudanese security forces to refrain from violence ahead of Saturday’s protest.

On Friday, military figures and new civilians from the new ruling council were sworn before Burhan followed his formation the day before.

The United Nations has criticized the latest military “unilateral” steps, while Western countries say it “makes it difficult to put the Sudanese Democratic transition back to the track”.
“Troika (Norway, Britain, United States), the European Union and Switzerland are very worried about the appointment of the Sudan Sovereign Board,” they said on Friday.
The statement called for the recovery of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who was detained for a while and then placed under house arrest after the military takeover.
