New Delhi: Indian sugar production is likely to decrease marginally to 30.5 million tons in the next 2021-22 season because more sugar cane will be transferred for making ethanol, senior government officials said on Monday.
Sugar production is estimated to have reached 31 million tons in the 2020-21 season (October-September), he said.
India is the second largest sugar producer in the world after Brazil.
“Big sugar cane plants are also good this year.
We expect more transfer sticks for the making of ethanol and the consequences of sugar production will be slightly lower at 30.5 million tons during the season 2021-22,” Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Food Subodh Kumar.
Singh told PTI.
In the current season, sugar cane is intended for the production of 2 million tons of sugar diverted to the making of ethanol, while in 2021-22 seasons demanding the production of 3.5 million tons of sugar will be transferred, he said.
However, sugar production will be sufficient to fulfill domestic consumption, which is expected to increase by 3.00,000-4.00,000 tons at 26.3-26.5 million tons in 2021-22 seasons, he added.
Domestic consumption in the 2020-21 season is estimated at 26 million tons.
With the possibility of the opening of sweeteners’ stocks, it is estimated at 9-9.5 million tons and the production expected of 30.5 million tons, the total availability of sugar in the 2021-22 season will be 39.5 to 40 million tons.
Domestic consumption can be around 26.5 million tons, while exports at 7 million tons next season.
Cover stock at the end of the following season will be around 6-6.5 million tons.
According to the official, around the 83,000 RS Crore stick has been cleaned so far against the total debt of RS 91,000 Crore in the current season.
“The remaining 8,000 crore RS balance.
In the next month, arrears can fall further,” he added.
