Kunduz: A suicide bombing against worshipers at the Shiite Mosque in the city of Kunduz Afghanistan killed at least 55 people on Friday, in the most bloody attack since US forces left the country.
Score more victims from the minority community were injured in the explosion, which had not been claimed but apparently designed to go further Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover.
The Islamic group of extremists, bitter Taliban rivals, has repeatedly targeted Shia in an effort to arouse sectarian violence in Sunni’s majority Afghanistan.
The medical source at the Kunduz Provincial Hospital said that 35 people died and more than 55 wounds had been brought there, while doctors without Borders (MSF) said 20 were dead and scored more injured.
Matiullah spiritually, director of culture and information in Kunduz for the new Afghan Taliban government, confirmed to AFP that the deadly incident was a suicide attack and that 46 people had died and 143 were injured.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid previously said, “An explosion occurred in a mosque of our Shiite colleague” in Kunduz.
Kunduz residents, the provincial capital with the same name, told AFP the explosion hit the Shia mosque during Friday prayers, the most important in a week for Muslims.
Zalmai Alokzai, a local businessman who rushed to the Kunduz Provincial Hospital to check whether doctors needed blood contributions, describing terrible scenes.
“The ambulance will return to the incident scene to bring dead people,” he said.
An international aid worker at the MSF Hospital in the city told AFP there was fears that the death toll could rise further.
“Hundreds of people gathered at the main gate of the hospital and cried for their relatives, but the armed Taliban tried to prevent meetings if another explosion was planned,” he said.
Graphic images distributed on social media, which cannot be verified immediately, show some blood-covered objects lying on the floor.
The picture shows plum smoke up into the air above Kunduz.
A female teacher in Kunduz told AFP the explosion occurred near his house, and some of his neighbors were killed.
“It was a very scary incident,” he said.
“Many of our neighbors have been killed and injured.
A 16-year-old neighbor was killed.
They could not find half of his body.
The 24-year-old neighbor was killed too.” Other videos show men pastoral people, including women and children, far from the scene.
A fearful crowd attacked the streets.
Aminullah, an eyewitness whose brother was at the mosque, told AFP: “After I heard the explosion, I called my brother, but he didn’t take it.” I walked towards the mosque and found my brother hurt and fainted.
We immediately took him to the MSF hospital.
“The location of Kunduz makes it the main transit point for economic exchanges and trade with Tajikistan.
It is a fierce battle place when the Taliban fought back to power this year.
It is often targeted by Sunni extremists.
Those who viewed them as a heretics, Shia Muslims have suffered some of the most cruel attacks in Afghanistan , with a demonstration that is bombed, the hospital targeted and commuting ambushes.
Shia forms around 20 percent of the Afghan population.
Many of them are Hazara, ethnic groups that have been very persecuted in Afghanistan for decades.
