COGGON: Authorities searched Monday for a man who shot and injured a sheriff’s deputy during an armed robbery at a petrol station in southern Iowa.
Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner stated Monday the deputy was hospitalized with severe injuries but in stable state.
He explained that it was the very first shooting one of the office’s deputies because 1973.
The deputy responded soon following an account of an alert at 10:19 pm Sunday in Casey’s General Store at Coggon, a town of 700 individuals about 25 miles (40 km ) north of Cedar Rapids, ” the sheriff said.

The man, thought to be in his 30s, pitched at a van which had been chased by the other deputy before the defendant appeared and fled on foot.

“We’ve identified a person of interest and when we don’t find him this afternoon, we’ll be asking the people for their help,” explained Gardner, adding that he expected to discharge the person’s identity later in the afternoon.
Overnight, police had requested people who reside near Coggon to remain inside and lock their doors.
Gardner stated they will need to stay attentive and”phone us whenever they see something unusual.” The injured deputy was flown into the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for therapy, and was not immediately identified by police.
Coggon Mayor Heather Beeh said citizens were concerned immediately because the manhunt continued.
“It was simply lots of waiting and you don’t know what is going to occur,” she explained.
